As we enter the month of February, many people begin to focus on Valentine's Day and the issue of love, but what is love? An old Tina Turner song says love is just "a second hand emotion", while other songs and stories tell of love's great and lasting value, such as " Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare.  What we sometimes call love can be merely an infatuation, obsession, emotional dependence, or ever lust.  Surely, there is someone who knows what love is! I believe God has the answer.

In John 3:16, the Bible says, " For God so loved the world, that HE gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  In Matthew 22, Jesus was asked which was the greatest commandment,  Jesus replied it was to first love God, then others.  The love of God is the Greek word agape.  It is a self-sacrificing, unconditional love,  Love isn't just a thing; it is a word of action. It is a word of giving, but not just red roses, cards and candy on a commercial holiday.  God gave Himself first in the person of His only  Son on the cross.  We can't truly love God or others, until we are willing to give ourselves away.  Godly love is not selfish, mean, or stingy.  We must rely on God to direct that sort of love through us.

We certainly live in a world where people need to be loved.  God loves people so very much, and has instructed us to love one another. It doesn't always come easily, nor does it happen through self-effort.  God developed agape love in us and then through us.
Take some time this month to practice loving people like God loves people.  Pray for strength and a heart of love.  It could be the best Valentine ever!

P.S. --Gentlemen, it wouldn't hurt to get your wife a card or some flowers! I'm just trying to be a blessing.

In Christian Love, Bro. Scott
